What does it mean to call something sacred in a world that feels increasingly chaotic?

Emily Austin sits down with writer and theologian Femi Olutade—a Nigerian-American Millennial, husband, father, hip-hop head, and follower of Jesus in the Eastern Orthodox tradition—to wrestle with the idea of holiness. Femi is best known as the lead writer for the acclaimed Dissect Podcast season on Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. and for his thoughtful essays on spirituality, culture, and history on Medium.

Their conversation starts with a reflection on power, using The Lord of the Rings as a jumping-off point: who should hold the ring, and what happens when they do? On Friday, November 3 at 7 p.m., the Rev. Dr. Robert MacSwain will deliver the Barth House Theological Society's Fall Lecture "Saints As Evidence for God." On the faculty of The University of the South (Sewanee) since 2009, MacSwain's teaching and research combine philosophy, theology, ethics, literature, and spirituality with a particular focus on how these five disciplines interact within the Anglican tradition.

This week on Faithfully Memphis, join the Reverend Lisa McIndoo, Rector of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church (Collierville) for a conversation with Sister Hannah, CSM, the Prioress of the Community of St. Mary in Sewanee, Tennessee. An Episcopal Benedictine monastic community for women, the community was founded in 1865 in New York – the first Episcopal monastic community in the United States. In 1873 the Community sent Sisters to Memphis to begin a school for girls and establish a Church home for the poor and needy, but their work was interrupted by the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878. All but one of the Sisters died in their attempts and are remembered today as the “Martyrs of Memphis” for their heroic service. The one surviving Sister moved to Sewanee, TN and in 1888 started what is now the Southern Province of the Sisters of St. Mary. Today the Sisters’ ministries include providing spiritual direction, leading retreats and workshops, preaching and teaching at churches across the country, and working with Oblates, Associates, volunteers, and Organic Prayer Program interns.

A century ago, the people of Calvary Episcopal Church in Memphis began presenting special weekday noontime preaching during Lent in a downtown theater. Five years after that, the Waffle Shop began, serving plates of waffles, chicken hash, and fish pudding to those who came to hear the preaching. In their discussion, Pat shares the driving force behind her life's work of advocacy for unhoused people experiencing mental illnesses and what people of faith can do to disrupt the social and political systems that contribute to ongoing homelessness.

Diana M. Comes serves as the Executive Director of the Community Legal Center. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Rhodes College in 2008 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 2011. Following graduation from law school, Ms. Comes served as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. Jon P. McCalla, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, and the Hon. Ronald L. Gilman, Senior Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She then joined the Memphis office of Butler Snow LLP, where she was an associate and then partner practicing primarily in the areas of commercial and appellate litigation, before joining the Community Legal Center in 2021. During her time in private practice, Ms. Comes was named as a SuperLawyers Mid-South Rising Star in the area of Business Litigation from 2017-2020 and to Best Lawyers in America in the area of Commercial Litigation from 2020-2021.

Diana is a past president of the Memphis-based Association for Women Attorneys and a board chair of the Memphis Farmers Market. She is a graduate of the New Memphis Institute Fellows program as well as the Tennessee Bar Association’s Leadership Law program.

We were honored to have her as a guest on Faithfully Memphis earlier this year during our series on creation care and stewardship, so this week, we are replaying her conversation with Bishop Phoebe.

Our prayers and deepest condolences are with Mia’s family and colleagues as they grieve this tremendous loss.

Mia holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology and a Bachelor’s degree in Geography both from the University of Memphis with concentrations in applied participatory action research of urban environmental affairs, and city and regional planning.

Continuing our series on creation care and stewardship, Nick Wiggins joins Bishop Phoebe for a conversation about his work at the Wolf River Conservancy. Nick is a native Memphian and aside from being an avid naturalist and outdoors enthusiast, he is committed to protecting our natural resources here in the Mid-South for all future generations benefit. As the Community Conservation Manager, Nick joins the Conservancy to serve the users of our Greenway, to ensure the neighborhood feels connected to the Greenway, in terms of recreation, transportation or more.

This week, we're delighted to kick off our first Faithfully Memphis series of the year - Creation Care and Stewardship - with a conversation with Cynthia McCarty. In addition to her role as Director of Children and Youth Ministry at Church of the Holy Apostles in Collierville, TN, Cynthia was a member of the Episcopal Church's delegation to the United Nations' Climate Change Conference in 2021. In this interview with Bishop Phoebe Roaf, Cynthia shares how her faith compels her to advocate for climate and creation care. 

MORE ABOUT CYNTHIA McCARTY

Cynthia was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. As a lifelong Episcopalian, she was involved in EYC, served on the Diocesan Youth Commission, and was the Diocesan representative for the Province VII Youth Commission. After earning a B.S. in Health Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Cynthia moved to Memphis and worked as the Aquatics Director at the Olive Branch Family YMCA.

In 2007, Cynthia was called back to Little Rock and served at the Director of Youth and Young Adult ministries at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.  During this time, she earned a Masters in Education in Middle Childhood Education.  Cynthia has worked the past four years as a middle school teacher for Shelby County Schools.

Cynthia is married to Chris and has two sons, Alex, 7, and Sam, 21 months.  They live in Germantown and have called Holy Apostles their church home for the last couple of years.

As the youth director, Cynthia wants to empower and equip the youth of the church with the resources they need to build onto their Journey of Faith.  .

Make plans today to take part in an interfaith initiative to benefit neighbors being served through the Mid-South Food Bank. Due to COVID-19, nearly 1 in 4 people in the MidSouth face food insecurity. Working together with a diverse group of members from other congregations, we can make a difference in people’s lives during the season of thanksgiving.

On Saturday, November 20 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. we will join volunteers from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim congregations who have been coming together for worship for more than 30 years. Everyone is asked to volunteer for a 90-minute shift alongside other people of goodwill from across our beloved community. We will meet 15 minutes prior to each shift in the east parking lot of Second Baptist Church for a time of prayer and instructions for collecting donations. The food bank needs shelf-stable, non-perishable food items as well as funds to support its work. Just $10 will purchase 30 meals.

The Very Rev Kim L. Coleman has served as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia since November 2002. An Episcopalian since 1993, Rev. Kim graduated cum laude from Virginia Theological Seminary in May 2001 and was ordained to the priesthood in December 2001. In addition to a Master of Divinity degree, Kim holds Bachelor of Arts degrees (1980) in Political Science and Economics from The Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania. Prior to entering the ordination track, Kim pursued a career in the association management and human resources. Lavonnie Perry Claybon, Ph.D. is a Research Assistant Professor and the Director of the Mid-South Access Center for Technology at the University of Memphis, where she is responsible for implementing, coordinating, and evaluating a comprehensive Assistive Technology Program that provides services to individuals of all ages with disabilities. For over 32 years, Dr. Perry Claybon has worked as an expert in the fields of education, human development, budgetary management, assistive technology, grant writing, and professional development and training. She holds multiple certifications in her fields of expertise. She has presented at local and national conferences in her various fields of experience. Aside from her work in human resources, assistive technology, and human development and training, Dr. Perry Claybon has taught traditional classes and online classes. These classes have focal points on educational technologies, teacher education, research methods, critical issues in distance education, and learning disabilities. She has taught these classes for the University of Memphis, George Washington University, and Drexel University.

After 25 years in development and management of a regional insurance and financial organization, The Craddock Company, Bill sold the business in 1991 and served in consulting and executive roles in the national Episcopal Church retiring as Senior Vice President of the Church Pension Group in 2015. Bill served as president of numerous local civic boards including Planned Parenthood, Memphis Rotary Club, and Goals for Memphis. He earned his undergraduate degree in Film at the University of Utah and studied Islam in Gaza, Palestine, Ma’had Al-Furqan in Kuwait, and the Graduate Theological Foundation. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Islamic Education from the Islamic Seminary of America.

In addition to clergy-work, Sh. Anwar works with IERA (Islamic Education and Research Academy), a worldwide organization that aims to spread awareness and dispel misconceptions about Islam.

About Scott

Scott joined Calvary’s staff as the 22nd rector in 2017. Previously, he was the rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he served since 2005. Before seminary, Scott worked as a carpenter and contractor, which began a curiosity about the way the "built environment" impacts Christian discipleship, especially with regard to stewardship of creation and Jesus's charge to welcome the stranger. A native of Arkansas, Scott received his Bachelor of Arts in English from John Brown University and a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. Scott enjoys playing guitar (and a little mandolin), riding bikes, carpentry, poems, and walking, whether on a path in the woods or a sidewalk in the city. He is married to Ardelle, who is a counselor and faculty member for CREDO, a clergy wellness program of the Church Pension Group. Ardelle and Scott have two children, Alden and Kate.

May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close Remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips Remember those that have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market Remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home Remember those who have no home.
